Homework

Aims of homework at Vista Academy

Homework is a key part of learning at Vista Academy and is aimed at achieving the following goals, all of which will help students to realise their potential:

  • To encourage the development of independent study.
  • To support and develop literacy across all subjects.
  • To provide opportunities for parents/carers to support the learning of their children.

Setting of homework

Homework assignments for all year groups will be set weekly at 9am on a Monday morning on Microsoft Teams.

These assignments will explain exactly what students need to complete each week. Homework tasks may be set via online platforms such as MathsWatch or Educake, or through physical pieces of work.

Where students are required to log into an online platform, login details will be provided in advance.

Parents/Carers can also monitor the homework set each week on Edulink.

What will be set for each year group?

One piece of homework will be set each week as follows:

  • Year 7: English, Maths, Science and Spanish
  • Year 8: English, Maths, Science and Geography
  • Year 9: English, Maths, Science and History
  • Year 10: All examined subjects
  • Year 11: All examined subjects

When is homework due?

The deadline for all homework to be completed and submitted is 6pm on a Sunday afternoon.

Students should indicate on Microsoft Teams when they have completed a piece of homework by clicking the ‘Hand in’ button. Guidance on how to do this can be found here.

Students therefore have a whole week to complete their homework tasks and the opportunity to seek support in school before the deadline, if required.

What if a student doesn’t complete a piece of homework?

If a student does not submit their homework by the required time, this will be logged on Edulink by the teacher.

Homework completion will be monitored centrally and where students fail to complete two or more pieces of homework in a week across all their subjects, they will be required to sit a ‘Homework detention’ where they will be supported to catch up with the pieces of incomplete homework.

If there are any problems completing the homework, please get in touch with the subject teacher via email or Edulink.

What support is there to help with homework?

Should students require extra support with completing their weekly homework, the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is open every day after school until 16:00. This will enable students to access computers, if they are needed to complete homework assignments, as well as providing a purposeful working space for completing homework.

Students can also speak to their subject teachers at any appropriate opportunity, should they want to discuss their homework.
