What are knowledge organisers?
These are documents that summarise the key learning points of a topic, or aspect of a topic. They will be organised in a way that groups information into key categories. Knowledge organisers are an excellent place to start when reviewing a topic, or carrying out pre-learning ahead of studying a topic.
Why should I use knowledge organisers?
- Knowledge organisers have been put together to include all core knowledge for a topic. Remembering this will mean you have all the core knowledge to be successful with the topic.
- They support with knowledge retrieval, increasing the ability to remember content at a later date
How to use knowledge organisers
- Look, Cover, Write, Check
- Read a section of the chosen knowledge organiser
- Turn the knowledge organiser over, or cover it up
- Write down everything you can remember about what you just read
- Check your notes against the knowledge organiser, filling in anything you missed in a different colour
- Repeat at spaced intervals (every few days)
- Get somebody else to ask you questions about one section of the knowledge organiser, checking you can answer them correctly
- Use them regularly to increase rates of retention
